From the School Nurse

Dear Parents, My name is Mary Pat Blanchette.  My husband and I have children in all the environments! We have been at RMS since our oldest was in the primary classroom; he now is part of Erkinder.

I have joined the team here at RMS and will be working with the community as the school nurse. I have been a nurse for 15 years, mostly spent working at Prince William Hospital in Manassas Va. I worked on the orthopedic/oncology floor for 13 years where my specialty was with patients coming to the floor from the recovery room after having orthopedic or spinal surgery.

After 13 wonderful years, I hung up my stethoscope a few years ago in anticipation of baby number 6. I am excited to be back again using my nursing skills to help the RMS community.

One of the first things on my list to help keep our children healthy and fully engaged at school is germ awareness. You may hear your children tell you about a little germ presentation; yes, there will be costumes involved!

Part of our presentation to the environments will be the basics of how to stay healthy this school year. We will be talking of 5 basic steps.

  1. Hand washing
  2. Hydration
  3. Healthy choice eating
  4. Sleep
  5. Exercise

Hand washing is so important; I cannot emphasize that enough. Good hand washing means warm water, soap, 20-30 seconds, front of the hand, back of the hands fingers/thumbs and nails, then thoroughly dry. It's so very basic but at times can be a lifesaver.

We all need to be well hydrated. Water is the best but hot tea with lemon and local honey during the change of seasons is a wonderful addition.

What do our plates look like? Heavy on the veggies and fruits or heavy on the carbohydrates and candies? Healthy eating gives our bodies the ability to fight germs.

Sleep is key for children (and adults too.) We are all busy with meetings and sports and life but it's so very important for all of us to get the much needed rest. Saying "no" to one more show, activity, etc. to help your children get their rest will give them much needed energy for school and fighting sickness.

Exercise - a little cardio to get the heart pumping is a natural immunity booster. We've been having jump rope contests at our house!

If we all try to be aware of the 5 steps this school year, I think we'll be on the road to a healthier year!

Thanks so much,

Mary Pat

Head of School's Message

Social grace, inner discipline and joy. These are the birthright of the human being who has been allowed to develop essential human qualities. ~Maria Montessori

Dear RMS Parents,

We’re just finishing the complicated but oh-so-important “phase-in” period of our school year, and entering the orientation and settling phase.  Beginning with lessons in ‘grace and courtesy’, each new community and every child within it finds and settles into their rhythm, personal and communal.  Stamina will grow, initial excitement will fade, but the child will begin to build the ‘social grace’ and ‘inner discipline’ that will be the foundation for the deeper ‘joy’ to follow.

It’s an important time for this hidden work, and it is greatly helped by ‘routine’… on time arrivals, a good night’s sleep the night before,…. all of these “little” things help the child develop their rhythm and connect it with the rhythm of the school day.  Life is difficult and full of surprises, but everything we can do to help preserve and promote the ‘routine’ is worth the effort.  And be sure to include the children in the preparation!  They love to help make lunches, lay out clothes, etc.

After this “settling time”, we’ll be in full swing, and open wide the door to observations and visits!

Parent Infant Session Special Offer

In October and November, Mrs. Brenda will be offering a special 8 week Parent Infant session, affectionately referred to as “Mommy & Me.” This session will be offered at no charge to our enrolled families and their friends. Stay tuned to your email for more details!

NEW Procedure for Absences

Our little school has grown into a big school and for the safety of all the children, we are updating our policy on the procedure to notify the school of absences.

  1. Going forward we will not be able to accept messages about the absence of a child from a sibling or as a spoken message from a parent at carpool. The sheer number of children entering each day makes it impossible for us to remember and relay these messages accurately. To communicate a child will be absent and why, please call or email the school before 9:00 AM.
  2. If a child is absent and we have not received official notification from a parent, we will be contacting you to confirm that the child is with you and the reason for the absence.

Family SCRIP Contribution

You may have noticed a new charge in your 2017-2018 contract named “Family SCRIP Contribution”.   This charge is due June, 2018, but in actuality, it is a charge designed to never be paid!  Here’s a brief explanation.

As you all probably know, SCRIP is a way for families to fund raise for the school via the money they already spend on other things (clothes, groceries, gas, movie tickets, whatever).  For example, if you buy $50 of movie tickets using SCRIP, you get $50 of movie tickets AND the school gets $4!  So it’s a great way to use the dollars you spend elsewhere to help the school raise money and keep tuition as low as we can.

In regard to the new “Family SCRIP Contribution” charge, every month you’ll get a report of exactly how much your SCRIP purchases have contributed to the school, and before the charge comes due, all those contributions will be credited on your agreement.  A mere $25 a month in contributions eliminates the charge altogether!

In addition this year, credits can be earned by attending Parent Nights!  Each Parent Night you attend gets you up to $20 in credit toward this charge!

To get started earning credits, contact our SCRIP coordinator, Rosanne Garvey, at rosanne505@verizon.net or call her at 703-447-9229.

Swim

Any student 7th grade or older at RMS is invited to join the RMS Swim team. They will be practicing and going to meets with the Seton Swim team. The fee is $150 per swimmer, $75 for siblings.

The swim season begins November 6th and ends near Feb 16th.  Practices are Monday (6:19am), Tuesday (6:04) and Thursday (6:04) at Central Park Aquatic Center. The practices are an hour and a half long.

The fees do not cover all of the expenses Coach Koehr incurs, so extra donations are appreciated.

All swim team parents are expected to volunteer at swim meets. Timing is the easiest volunteer opportunity though others are available.

RMS team members are invited to all Seton Swim events beginning with the team bonfire on November 11th at Coach Koehr's house.

Please visit http://www.setonswimming.org for all information and to sign up.

Head of School's Message

It is well to cultivate a friendly feeling towards error, to treat it as a companion inseparable from our lives, as something having a purpose, which it truly has. -    Maria Montessori

Dear RMS Parents,

What an exciting time the beginning of the school year is!  It was such a pleasure to see all the children greeting their peers, meeting their new friends, and staring in wonder at all the changes their environments have undergone over the summer.  A new community is forming again in each environment, and even with our brief phase-in days, the profound work of the “meta-curriculum” has begun.

I came across the quote above, and thought it fitting for a “beginning of school year” message.  As we, the “prepared adults” (parents and staff), work together to assist each child’s development in independence and self-mastery, it’s important to remind ourselves that we’re not perfect either, not by a long shot, and that mistakes will be made.  And just as we work together to help each child, we need to help each other stay focused on the goal, and not get distracted or discouraged by our inevitable failings.  After all, they are really opportunities to grow in humility, and thus holiness, and thus serve the child better.

Sports Opportunities

RMS has partnered with our greater community to create opportunities for children at RMS to participate in sports teams.

Swim

Any student 7th grade or older at RMS is invited to join the RMS Swim team. They will be practicing and going to meets with the Seton Swim team. The fee is $150 per swimmer, $75 for siblings.

Seton purposely tries to keep their fees low so these fees don’t quite cover practice lane rental. The rest (meets, pizza, uniforms, swim bags, houses for states, buses to Richmond, officials training, coach and officials uniforms, computer and sound equipment, etc.) all come from donations. Parents will be asked to help where they can, at least committing to helping with timing at meets. They can also always use people who are willing to be trained as a stroke and turn judge.
